Powered Toothbrush Brands

brand names of electric toothbrushesWhen you think of powered toothbrushes two, maybe three, brand names come to mind. Braun – Oral-B and Philips Sonicare dominate the market for a long time.

Braun – Oral-B

Oral-B is a brand of Procter & Gamble. They use it for a line of toothbrushes, both manual and electric, toothpaste, mouthwashes and dental floss.

Dr. Robert W. Hutson (1920–2001), a periodontist from California, invented a toothbrush with flat-ended nylon bristles. He named his new toothbrush with 60 tufts „Oral-B 60“. And the name Oral-B remained when he sold his business.

It later became part of the Gilette group. Braun – part of this group too – used the brand name Oral-B then for their electric toothbrush line. Gilette Canada, who filed a patent for reminder bristles in 1987, later became part of the Procter and Gamble group.

Philips Sonicare

Philips is a Dutch technology company with a wide line of products. Oral healthcare products are just a small, but significant part of their products.

Sonicare was originally developed by David Giuliani, Dr. David Engel and Dr. Roy Martin. Their company GEMTech, later named Optiva Corporation, was then bought by Philips and became the Philips Oral Healthcare, Inc.

Lesser known brands

Colgate does not sell any rechargeable toothbrushes at the moment. All their electric toothbrushes are battery-powered.

Same is true for the Spinbrush brand sold by Arm and Hammer.

Pursonic, based in New York, sells a small range of electric toothbrushes online. Their website does not give a lot of information about their products and some Amazon customer are not too happy with their purchases. http://pursonicusa.com

2nice, a brand sold online, has a few good reviews on Amazon. The information on their budget prized products is limited tough.

Water Pik, Inc. started with the development of oral irrigators for dentists. Their brand name soon became a synonym for oral irrigator in the US. They also develop shower heads. Their first sonic toothbrush entered the market in 2007 and since then the company introduced a few newer models. Since the company mainly concentrates on dental water jets, their toothbrush line is still limited.
